Quick answer

Yes — our Ebru (Turkish water marbling) workshop uses water-based, non-toxic materials. We do not use any solvents, turpentine, varnishes, or harsh chemicals. It is a safe, family-friendly experience for both children and adults.

What we use in the workshop

• Colors — water-based fabric (textile) paints. These are water-based and non-toxic. They rinse off skin easily with soap and water.
• The water bath — carrageenan. The tray of "thickened water" that the paint floats on is made with carrageenan, a food-grade thickener derived from seaweed (the same type of ingredient used in many foods). It is harmless to handle.
• Color fixing — a small amount of alum. We add a little alum (a common, non-toxic mineral salt) to the water to help the colors set onto the paper or fabric.

Are there any solvents or strong chemicals?

No. Authentic Turkish water marbling is an entirely water-based art form. We use no solvents, turpentine, varnishes, thinners, or strong chemicals at any point during the class.

A note for sensitive skin

While none of our materials are toxic, as with many art supplies the paints or the alum solution can be mildly drying or irritating for people with very sensitive skin after prolonged contact. If you have sensitive skin, or would simply prefer not to get your hands in the paint, gloves are available on request — just let your instructor know at the start of the session.
